These animals are superb family companions, especially for elderly people. They also make excellent therapy pets. However, they are not recommended for kids, because they have very fragile bones and hence are susceptible to fractures. Puppies and some adult dogs have an unclosed section on top of the skull called ‘molera.’ These dogs are extremely prone to head injuries, which can be disabling or fatal. These little creatures should not be trusted with larger dogs because of their challenging behavior.

These dogs have developed in Mexico and are named after the province with the same name. They are the smallest in the world and the only natural toy dogs. The ancestors of these dogs were worshipped by the Aztecs and Toltecs. Show quality individuals should not weight over 6 pounds, but pet quality animals can be larger or much smaller. There exist two types within the breed: smoothcoats and longcoats. Every coat color and pattern is permissible, but solid colors are preferable.
