Chihuahuas - Breeders - Description

Chihuahuas, despite their small dimensions and swift movements, feature a strong body build, with deep and roomy chest and widely set front paws. Hindquarters are also muscular and powerful. The head is apple-dome shaped, as many breeders refer to it. Ears are large, pointed, wide at the base, and carried erect. They are inclined to the sides at an angle of about 45 degrees. Eyes are round and set widely apart, and the muzzle is small. These distinctive features give the face of a Chihuahua a saucy expression.

Back is straight and outlined evenly. Chest is roomy, but not barrel-shaped, although some consider this feature admissible. Tail curves in a sickle-like or loop-shaped figure, and carries over the back, inclined a bit to the side with the tip touching the back. Chihuahuas occur in a variety of colors, including fawn, brindle, blue, blonde, black, brown and 'splashed'. In America, solid colors are preferable, and Mexicans like broken colored species.

Chihuahuas weigh 2 to 6 pounds. Species, exceeding 6 pounds are considered faulty, and they are not supposed to take part in breeding programs. They live 10-15 years and, on rare occasions, their life span can reach 18 years. Puppies are born with a 'molera', an open section in the skull, which usually closes by adulthood. However, in some cases, this area remains open, and this makes Chihuahuas extremely vulnerable.
