These dogs are famous for their vivacious and merry disposition. They are very sweet with their owners and make excellent companions for elderly people. Being fragile animals, they are not recommended for families with small children, whose behavior may result in a serious trauma. Although this is the smallest dog on earth, it acts as if it was the biggest one. These dogs are very protective around their loved ones and are intolerant of alien dogs that happen to trespass on their territory.

The show quality dogs of this breed should not exceed 6 pounds in weight, but pet quality animals reach 9 pounds and more. The head of these dogs is rounded, with large, dark, luminous, wide-set eyes and large ears that are held erect. The muzzle is short, slightly pointed, with lean cheeks and jaws. The shoulders are lean; the neck is slightly arched and sloping gracefully; the tail is moderately long and carried up or out. The coat may be either smooth or long.
